I am SO proud of Max. We've been trying to break him from his pacifier habit for MONTHS! He's been talking like he wants to get rid of it, but without fail, at bedtime he cried until he got it back. And, quite frankly, I've been too much of a softie and too lazy to force him to give it up. Plus, he pretty much has just used it at night.
Well, last Saturday, me and the kids did a major overhaul cleaning of the basement. Too much mess - too many toys. During the cleaning, Max brought his pac to me and told me it was garbage and to throw it away. This wasn't the first time he's said this - we've been encouraging him for months. But, this time, I just took it quietly and put it into my pocket. Normally I go into a dramatic charade and say "Are you sure?" "You might be sad at bedtime without it" or "Okay, watch me throw it away"! I know - maybe Bria gets some of her drama from me. Anyhow, I just smiled and pocketed the pacifier.
When bedtime came, Max didn't say ONE word about it - and he slept all night without so much as a whimper. The next morning, I gave him giant praises, and he just simply said "Pac's are for babies. I'm a big boy."
(this picture is from April 2008 - if this doesn't show his obsession with pacifiers, I don't know what else could!)I'm so proud of him!! This is something he truly decided and carried through on his own! It was SO much easier than going through a power struggle with him and deciding for him what was right. Instead, he made his own decision and, since he's a big boy, stuck to his guns.
So, I am happy to say - we are currently pacifier free! (Now to finish the potty training).
Here's hopeing it lasts!
ReplyDeleteSo cute. I always think it's a little sad to make them give up the bink. That's awesome that he made the decision!
ReplyDeleteDid it make you a little sad?? Carsen did the same thing last year when he was Max's age. We had tried lots of ways to get rid of it but I have a hard time being too strict with these things! One night, I was in getting ready for bed and he brought in his binkie and threw it away and said it was yuckie. I was so glad he did it on his own but it was one more thing that made him less of a baby and more of a big boy and so I think it was harder on me than him! Way to go Max!!
ReplyDeleteThat picture of Max is so cute. I am glad that he is giving up the pacifier since it can lead to buck teeth in the end. Hurray for Max
