This post is really long overdue since Logan is already a week old. But, we've been spending the week resting, readjusting and getting to know the newest member of our family.
Last Thursday turned out to be a really big day for our family. It was Bria's first day of school and the day Logan was born. We all got up really early, walked Bria to the bus stop and then headed off to the hospital. I had a scheduled induction because of a few things. The most important reason for me was because Logan was sitting so low. He dropped down too early and it was very, very painful to carry him that low for so long (6 weeks!). The reason the Dr. wanted to induce was because he suspected that the baby was sitting on my gall bladder and that is apparently a very serious condition. I don't know for sure if I did have the condition or not, but I was experiencing symptoms and the Dr said what little they do know about it is that it can lead to still birth. Definitely don't want that. So, induction it was.
It was very different having a baby this way. A lot less panicky and confusing. The Dr broke my water and then started me on pitocin about 11:15 and just kind of let me go. As soon as the contractions got painful, I got an epidural. And then more waiting. The hardest part was not eating. We were supposed to be there at 8:30 in the morning, but got pushed back a little bit. I had breakfast about 6 or 6:30 in the morning. So, I was pretty starving all day. By the time I finally did get to eat, we figured that in 26 hours, all I had eaten was a bowl of cereal. I was really shaky during the labor, which I have been with all of our kids. But, this time I was shaky for 7 hours straight. As soon as I could finally eat, I started to calm down.
We are so happy to have Logan here. He is such a good baby so far. He sleeps, sleeps some more, eats, more sleeping and occasionally needs a diaper change. The kids are also adjusting well. Bria told her kindergarten class about her new baby brother and how cute he is. She is such a help with taking care of him. If I ever need a diaper or a change of clothes, she is right on top of it. She loves holding Logan and will every chance she gets. Max on the other hand is adjusting a little bit more like a 3 year old boy - he really couldn't care less. He tells people that "the baby came out of my mom's tummy - see?" and was sure to show Logan where his bed was going to be (probably so Logan wouldn't think that Max's bed was his - these things are important after all). But other than that, it's life as normal for Max. He doesn't care that Logan gets more mommy time and pretty much just does his own thing. I thought he might have a little more jealousy, but he's adjusted to his new role as big brother quite nicely.
Congratulations Shatzi and Dave! He is absolutely adorable. I'm so glad to hear that labor went well for you. I have been induced with all three of my kids so I don't know any different. Hooray for new babies!!
